A calf cramp can turn a sound sleep into an instant scramble for the edge of the bed. A foot cramp can stop a walk or workout just as quickly. So, why do muscles cramp? Usually, a muscle and the nerves controlling it become temporarily overexcited, causing a sudden, involuntary contraction that is painful and difficult to release.
Most cramps are harmless and pass within seconds or minutes. But they can feel alarming, especially when they happen repeatedly at night or interrupt exercise. Understanding the likely trigger can help you get relief and decide whether a conversation with a health care professional is warranted.

The popular explanation that every cramp means dehydration or low electrolytes is too simple. Conditions that affect circulation, nerves, kidneys, thyroid function, or metabolism can sometimes be linked with recurrent cramps. Diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and nerve compression are examples of issues that may need attention when cramps are frequent or come with other symptoms. Age can also play a role: night cramps become more common in older adults, often without a single clear cause.
The goal is to gently lengthen the cramped muscle and allow it to relax. Avoid forceful bouncing or aggressive massage, which can make a sore muscle feel worse afterward.
For a calf cramp, straighten the leg and slowly pull your toes toward your shin. If you can stand safely, place the affected foot flat on the floor and lean forward slightly with the heel down. For a foot cramp, gently pull the toes upward and massage the arch with steady, comfortable pressure.
A warm shower, heating pad, or warm towel may help relax lingering tightness. If the muscle remains sore after the cramp releases, light movement and a cool pack can feel better for some people. Drink fluids if you have been sweating heavily, exercising in heat, or are recovering from stomach illness, but there is no need to force large amounts of water for every ordinary cramp.
Prevention depends on the likely trigger. If cramps appear during workouts, reduce the intensity or duration temporarily, then build back gradually. A few minutes of easy movement before exercise and a consistent training plan can help muscles adapt.
If calf or foot cramps wake you at night, gentle calf stretches before bed may be worthwhile. Try standing facing a wall, stepping one foot back, keeping that heel down, and leaning forward until you feel a mild calf stretch. Hold it without pain, then repeat on the other side. Regular daytime movement can also help if you sit for much of the day.
Hydration works best as a daily habit rather than an emergency fix. Drink according to thirst, increase fluids during heat and prolonged activity, and include water-rich foods in your routine. For exercise lasting several hours or involving substantial sweat loss, an electrolyte-containing drink or snack may make sense, especially if you are replacing sodium lost through sweat. For a short, ordinary workout, water is usually enough.
A balanced eating pattern supports normal muscle function without relying on a single “anti-cramp” food. Fruits, vegetables, beans, dairy or fortified alternatives, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins provide a range of minerals. If you suspect a deficiency, ask a clinician about testing rather than self-treating with high-dose supplements.
It can also help to keep a brief cramp log for two weeks. Note the time, location, activity, hydration, exercise changes, and medications. Patterns often become clearer when you see them on paper, and the information can make a medical visit more productive.
An occasional cramp after a long hike is usually not an emergency. Recurrent cramps deserve more attention when they disrupt sleep, limit daily activities, or do not improve after reasonable changes to activity, stretching, and hydration.
